The Neowhovian Experience

I am extremely pleased to announce the launch of The Neowhovian Experience 2011, the official compilation of the blog – now available as an ebook on Kindle from Amazon!

Along with all the posts from 2011 – Confessions, Nu-Views, and Reviews of both new episodes and DVDs – it includes my reviews of the Doctors' respective eras (from my marathon viewing) and three brand new reviews exclusive to the book (Victory of the Daleks from Series Five and the January 2011 DVD releases, The Dominators and Meglos). There will eventually be a print version (as well as other ebook versions) available, too, just cuz.

The price for all this is just $1.99. Given the size of the download, that's the lowest price Amazon will let me charge. Why buy it when you can get (most of) it online for free? Well, maybe you want to have it on your Kindle when you don't have Internet access. Maybe you want to be able to go to the table of contents and find everything more easily. Maybe you don't have time to read the blog posts as they come up, and you want to be able to read them whenever. Maybe you just want to show your support for me and what I do here. Or – oh yeah – maybe it's those exclusive extras. Whatever your reason, two bucks isn't a whole lot to invest. I hope you'll consider it.

Will You Help Make It Happen?

I’m not sure how many folks who read this blog also read Adventures with the Wife in Space, though I imagine there are quite a few (and many more who read Wife in Space than Neowhovian). I just started reading it myself, and have found it great fun – it’s someone else’s (much more elaborate and structured) take on what I do in the Nu-Views with the Ladies.

One of the brilliant things to come out of Sue’s (that’s the eponymous “wife”) reactions to the earliest stories is something I’ve noted myself – at its beginning, Doctor Who‘s main protagonist was, in fact, Ian. They’ve even got a T-shirt about it at their shop.

Why am I bringing that up here? Well, it’s because the actor who played Ian (William Russell) is one of the guests at Gally in February (you may remember I’m going). At one point, Neil (that’s the Wife in Space blogger) said he wanted to get Sue there so she could have her picture taken with Mr. Russell while wearing the “They should have called the show IAN” T-shirt. Neil and Sue won’t be at Gally – but I will!

Would you like to see a photo of actor and shirt together? I would! In fact, I’d love to be the one wearing the shirt in said photo! However, since I don’t have a lot of spare cash, I thought perhaps I could ask my readers to pitch in. All I’m looking for here is $50 or so, to cover the cost of the T-shirt and the photo op with Mr. Russell. If I get that support, I’ll buy the shirt, get the photo, and make sure it makes it to both the front page here and to Wife in Space (for them to do with as they see fit).

So if you think that would be cool, too, please pitch in. Any amount is great. Once I reach $50 I’ll take out the link below – no need to be greedy. Thanks for your support, and for helping to make the silly dream of a nerd (or two or three) come true!

Thank you for all your support!
UPDATE: You can see the resulting photo in my post of 25 Feb 2012 here.

CafePress Shop Now Open!

I am extremely pleased to announce that the Confessions of a Neowhovian shop on CafePress is now open for business! We’re offering primarily T-shirts (also mugs) with designs I’ve made to celebrate Doctor Who and its newer fans. If you’re a Long-Term Fan, never fear – there’s stuff for you, too!

Here’s a small sampling of some of the designs:

I really hope you enjoy the designs. Browse the shop for many more. If you see one that you like but you want to have it on something besides a T-shirt or mug, let me know which of CafePress’s items you’d like, and I’ll add it to the shop.

A link to the shop will always be available at the bottom of the right-hand sidebar here on the blog (see the widget with sample products). You can also get to it directly at www.cafepress.com/neowhovian. I’d love to hear your feedback. Happy shopping!

Breaking News!

Today, Gallifrey One put out the open call for panelists for their upcoming 2012 convention in February.

I am pleased to announce that I have been accepted as a panelist for "Let's Take It From the Top: Introducing New Fans to the Classic Show." Check out this and other panels on the convention website.

If you're at Gally yourself (17-19 Feb 2012 in Los Angeles), I'd love you to stop by to say hello! Whether or not you're interested in what the panel has to say, it would be nice to meet some readers.

Gallifrey, Ho!

I've made a decision, and committed to the Plan: I'm headed to Gallifrey One 2012 in February! It will be my first ever Doctor Who convention (or, umm… any convention, for that matter).

If you like what I've been doing here and would like to live vicariously through me as I blog about my Con experiences – including, hopefully, meeting some of the Names who will be there (like Paul McGann, the Eighth Doctor himself) – please consider showing your support by contributing to cover my expenses. To the right, you should see a Send me to the Con! button. Clicking that will take you to a page where you can choose any amount you'd like to give (it will go into the Neowhovian PayPal account, but you don't need your own PayPal account; credit cards also work).

Once I've reached my goal (a relatively modest $500), I'll remove the button and stop taking contributions. There's no need to be overly greedy, after all. In the meantime, I'll keep writing the reviews you've come to expect, which you will hopefully continue to find entertaining and/or insightful.

Thanks for reading the blog!

The 30 Day Doctor Who Challenge

Now that I’ve completed the challenge, I thought I’d post it in its entirety here on the front page for folks to view. Day 1 is presented before the break to whet your appetite; click on the page title or the “continued…” link to see my choices and comments for all 30 days.

I’ve decided to play along with The 30 Day Doctor Who Challenge, as set up by one of the Time Vault podcasters on his personal blog.  Starting 21 Jun 2011, I will answer one question a day in the right sidebar and update the information on this page, too.  Post your own answers, if you like!

Day 1: Favourite / Least Favourite Doctor

The favorite is a tough call, but I’m going to have to go with “my” Doctor: Ten

The least favorite is easier, though I dislike him less than I once did: Six

To elaborate, I think anyone who does this challenge is likely to pick “their” Doctor for the favorite slot. The Doctor who really reels you in, the one who was there at your beginning, the one who made you love this crazy show – that’s “your” Doctor, and he will forever be foremost in your heart. Others may tug your heart in their own way, but “your” Doctor will never be superceded.

Conversely, one’s least favorite might change as you see more of various Doctors. For me, I’ve never been over-the-moon about Six. However, as mentioned above (see the linked Confession #7 for more details), I no longer hate him. I’ve come to appreciate him for what he does bring to the table. So there’s no one I truly dislike as the Doctor; Six just happens to be at the bottom of my list.

Confessions of a Neowhovian Has Regenerated!

Welcome to the new incarnation of Confessions of a Neowhovian.  Under the new site structure, you'll find Confessions, Reviews, and Nu-Views all within their own blog stream, with the most recent post from any category showing up here on the front page.  You'll be able to subscribe to an RSS feed for any of them individually or all of them together, depending on from which page you choose to add the feed.

Another new feature is that each post will appear as a "teaser" here on the front page.  Just click on the title or on "read more" to go to the full post.  From the post page, you'll also be able to add comments, if you are so inclined.  Unfortunately, all the previously posted comments were lost during site regeneration (though they're still there at the previous incarnation).  Please don't let that deter you from posting here.

Finally, I'd like to send a big Thank You to Rich Morris for the beautiful art he created for me for the new site!  I never knew I could look so awesome as a 'Toon.  Be sure to check out his Comix Blog if you've never seen it before – it's well worth a read for any Whovian.

Again, welcome to the new site, and thanks for reading!

Farewell to an Old Friend

All too soon after Nicholas Courtney, one of fandom's favorite Who actresses has passed on.  Yesterday Elisabeth Sladen, known to Whovians of all flavors as Sarah Jane Smith, died of cancer.  Due to circumstances beyond my control, I was without Internet most of the day yesterday, so I know I'm a little late to join in, but I wanted to add my voice to the chorus of those expressing their regret for her death at such a relatively young age (63).  Everything I've ever heard of her indicates she was a lovely person, and I'm so sad that we will not have her bright light with us any more.

RIP, Lis.  You will be missed.

Schedule Adjustment

In the interest of maintaining the quality of my posts (and my sanity), I have decided to change my posting schedule, starting next week (Wednesday, 23 Feb 11).  Rather than trying to post a Confession every week and squeeze in Reviews and Nu-Views as they arise, I will only post something from one of those three classes every week, depending on DVD release schedules and WhoFest session dates.

Partly, this allows me to "ramp up" to my intended eventual tripartite blog structure.  A revised, custom site is under construction (don't ask about a release date for that; I've no idea at this stage) in which each type of post (Confessions, Reviews, and Nu-Views) will have its own blog-stream.  You'll be able to follow the RSS feed for any one of them, or all of them.  If I gain a real Readership, I might even consider adding a forum.  It'll be cool; just wait and see.

Another thing I hope to improve with the upcoming site is giving readers the ability to post comments on Reviews and Nu-Views as well.  Not that there are many comments yet…  (C'mon, people!  I can see you in my stats!  I know someone's at least loading my pages!)  I recognize that episode reviews are probably the most likely to inspire chatter, so that's one of the main reasons I wanted to blog-etize all three sections.  In the meantime, please feel free to comment about any section of the site on the Confessions page.

Now just because I've declared that I will only post in one category a week, it doesn't mean I won't occasionally post to more, if I get inspired.  Sometimes I'll want to write a lot – I do get slightly obsessive about things like blogging.  And, of course, there's Series Six coming up.  So pull up a chair and settle in.  There's plenty to come.

Post-poned

Due to the unfortunate encroachment of Real Life, Confession #5 will need to be postponed until next week.  With yesterday’s release of The Movie and The Mutants, there should be some new reviews in the next week or two, as well.

My apologies if I’ve disappointed anyone (with my vast, single digit readership, I’m sure there’s somebody…).  I’ll get back on track as soon as possible, once these pesky RL issues are resolved.
